Mayotte: Hardening of the teachers' strike, week of all hazards
The main unions primary school teachers in Mayotte (SNUIPP and FO) decided on Monday to tighten their strike began over a week.

The delay announced of several days in the report of the ministerial mission on the indexation of wages as well as negotiations on a final determination of the rate of indexation scheduled for the end of April only, with a final arbitration at the end of the first half, were led to the anger of officials strikers on l'île aux parfums.

They accuse the government of openly trying to save time in this sensitive matter which shook Mayotte, with high risk of contagion during the week to other public functions of the island.

According to the teachers' unions, "195 elementary schools and kindergartens have been closed since the outbreak of the strike. 30 open establishments operate difficultly because of the lack of teachers on strike".

Teachers strikers want an indexation of wages to the same treatment as Reunion, that is 53% surcharge.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the government would index the wage the three public services of Mayotte up only about 40% as in Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The government plans as well to set up a schedule of five years, with a salary increase of 8% annually.
