According to the latest statistical figures provided by the ratio of population of Family Planning and Demographic Yearbook - the fertility rate in Mauritius was down last year, from 2.1% during the last fifteen years against 1.41 % in 2013.

According to the Mauritius Family Planning Association, Mauritius also ranks among the top ten countries counting the highest population density in the world.

The density of the Mauritian population is thus estimated at 653 people per square kilometer in 2013.

While more than 12% of the current population of the island is over 60 years old by forty years this proportion should thus be around 34.3% according to recent forecasts, as reported the Le Matinal newspaper.

As a reminder, life expectancy in Mauritius is 80 years for women and 75 for men.
