Mauritius: gnats imported from India to kill mealybugs

The Mauritian Ministry of agro-industry will in a few weeks introduce some 200 imported midges of India, to eradicate mealybugs, leathery pests ravaging papayas, vegetable productions and other flowers of the island since the beginning of the year.

A first batch of larvae has landed on the island at the end of November and after a phase of reproduction in a laboratory the Ministry gnats will be launched in the regions most affected of Mauritius, as the North and West, according to the newspaper L'Express Mauritius.

As a reminder, the midges from a few centimeters lay thousands of larvae that will destroy the scales, as demonstrated it the successful experiences of their introduction in the countries of Southeast Asia, India or in some U.S. States.
