The fleet of the Dutch admiral Pieter Both from the East Indies after having sailed from Bantam December 27, 1614, landed in the Mauritian waters in March 1615. Three of the four boats - Banda, the United Provinces and Gelderland - sank after being caught up in a violent storm. And the admiral was killed in the storm.

The archaeological work on wrecks including Banda and the United Provinces thus continues this year celebrating the 400th anniversary of the death of Pieter Both with the wording of a book compiling all of the objects recovered from the wreck, including porcelains still undamaged, guns and other coins.

An exhibition, publication of a book and searching around the wreck of Gelderland are the next steps to honor the underwater archeology of Mauritius.
