Mauritius: The minimum wage at the heart of the debates between trade unionists

A workshop for trade unions in Mauritius to discuss on the minimum wage for Mauritian workers was held on Tuesday on the side of Quatre Bornes.

Different proposals will shortly be made following this work and submitted directly to Ministry of Labour.

This initiative put on the table the folder of a minimum wage of record was highlighted by Anbah Sabaputtee, President of the Trade Union Trust Fund (TUTF).

"In Mauritius, there is no mechanism for the minimum wage or living wage," explains the president of TUTF.

According to him, a minimum wage should enter into force in the labor legislation, as the difference between the rich and the poor do not retreat in Mauritius, and "the difference between high and low wages is 7.2% in the public sector.”
