Mauritius: The former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam arrested for the fifth time

The former Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, has been arrested on Tuesday afternoon for the fifth time over a period of a few months.

This time, it is the Betamax case that catches up with the former strongman of island. Two charges (influence peddling and conspiracy) have been lodged against him, including the possible pressure on public servants who were responsible of the project.

The Betamax case concerns the chartering of petroleum products consigned from India for a contract of 10 billion rupees. *

As a reminder, this fuel transport agreement between India and Mauritius had been assigned under the former term of office. The former Labour Minister of Commerce and Industry, Rajesh Jeetah, would also be associated with the Betamax case since the wife and brother of the latter were shareholders of the company which benefited from the market.

* One euro roughly equivalent to 39 rupees
