Mauritius: The Mauritian population is the oldest in Africa

According to the latest statistical figures collected by the United Nations, Mauritius has the oldest population of the African continent.

More than 12% of the current Mauritian population is older than 60 years against 5.3% on average in the other African countries.

The median age of almost 34 years in Mauritius lies ahead of the vast majority of the nations of the black continent that display on their side a median age of less than 20 years, as reported by the Le Défi Quotidien newspaper.

As a reminder, the elderly already represented 12% of the population of the island in 2012, with 154.369 persons over 60 years identified.

In 40 years, the Ministry of health of Mauritius previewed that 30% of people will have more 60 years — nearly a third of the Mauritian population, with a life expectancy of 80 years for women and 75 years for men.
