According to the Association of Bus Transport Workers (ATTA), assaults against the personnel in this sector in Mauritius reached a disturbing level. Thus, 243 assaults have been counted last year on workers and 8 violent acts have been committed since the beginning of 2015.
The President of the ATTA, Parmanan Runglall, demands better security for transport workers by introducing cameras in buses. The president of the Transport Workers Association of Bus also highlights that the police presence will be enhanced from 18 hours.
The association also wishes to soon meet Nando Bodha, the Ministry of Transport to which the members have already written to discuss with him these alarming figures for the profession.
As a reminder, more than 221,500 passengers were registered in weekly average on the bus network in the country in 2013.
