Mauritius: Over 100,000 cannabis plants uprooted in 2014

The drug squad unit of the Mauritian Police has ripped off, in 2014, about 102,000 cannabis plants. The previous year, gandia plantations which had been subject of destruction in Mauritius, were close to only 55,000 plants across the country.

Owners of these illegal crops could face up to 15 years imprisonment for the crime on the island if the police manage to identify them. Destroyed cannabis accounts for about 75% of drug-related misdemeanors, while cases concerning heroin represent 13% of drug seizures in Mauritius.

1293 people have been arrested last year in possession of gandia against 1.102 the previous year. The number of cases of possession of heroin for its part has largely increase with 410 people arrested for this offense in comparison to 255 individuals caught in pocession of the  hard drug.
