Mauritius: New detoxification program for drug addicts




The Minister of Health, Anil Gayanhas announced earlier this week that the Mauritian government will implement in two weeks time a new detoxification program for drug addicts.
 
Methadone substitution product will be replaced by suboxone according to the authorities is expected to be a substitute therapy which stops within six months any addiction to hard drugs. Only the new listed addicts would be able to use this product as part of medical care in Mauritius.
 
As a reminder, methadone is used over more than 8 years on the island as a treatment alternative to hard drugs. Some 10,000 addicts are being counted by the Mauritian authorities.
 
In 2012 a report by the International Narcotics Control Board, depending UN, placed at the Maurice index, as the first consumer of hard drugs in Africa.
