Mauritius: Mauritian Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth, announces a financial assistance for smallholders




Mauritian Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth, recently recalled in the beginning of the week his full and complete support for small farmers on the island.
 
The government intends to unlock thus financial assistance for those who produce up to 60 tons of sugarcane. 2,000 rupees extra on the price to come from the ton of cane will be allocated to small farmers and so they do not escape the fields. Sir Anerood Jugnauth also announced the intention of the authorities to enable small farmers to acquire 35% of shares in refineries and distilleries.
 
As a reminder, small planters were 35,000 in 2006 against only some 15,000 today. Sugar production in 2014 in Mauritius reached 400,000 tons by the Chamber of Agriculture of Mauritius.
