While shark attacks have increased in recent years on the coast of Reunion, the Ministry of fisheries of the island is concerned on his side of the drop in the shark population in Mauritian waters and the potential impact on the marine ecosystem.

Since the beginning of 2015, professional divers and other Coast Guard confirms this fact with rarefaction of sharks. Illegal fishing by local fishermen, particularly in the east of the island, would be blamed by the authorities. The shark fin soup is indeed a highly appreciated dish in restaurants in Mauritius.

Asian fishing boats are also suspected of engaging in this illegal practice. The Mauritian Coast Guard thus prepare to strengthen their surveillance to curb the growing phenomenon.
