Mauritius: Destruction of fruit crops on the island by bats




Bats, for many years have the obsession of local fruit producers and did not face the heavy losses suffered by the industry in Mauritius.
 
The fruit sector is currently experiencing an estimated loss of 40% to 50 % of its production. Safety nets are not sufficiently effective according to professionals.
 
It is to be remembered that some 55,000 bats were recorded in 2014 in Mauritius. Bat colonies Pteropus Niger, thus attack crops of fruit in the orchards of the island and only the use of protective nets to fight against bats is recommended for the time being the authorities.
