Mauritius: Between 400 and 500 diabetes-related amputations annually on the island

Diabetics or individuals predisposed to the disease in Mauritius today represent about 300,000 people in a population of about 1.3 million inhabitants.

Every year, it is thus between 400 and 500 patients who need to be amputated because of diabetes. And hundreds of diabetes are diagnosed every day on the island.

The prevalence rate of diabetes in 2014 was thus 23.6% in the Mauritian population aged between 25 and 74 years, while at the same time one in two persons of the same age is already showing pre-diabetic signs.
