Marathi Hindu community celebrates the Ganesh Chaturthi




The Hindu community of Marathi origin religiously celebrates this Friday, September 18, 2015 the birth of Ganesha, son of Shiva and Goddess Parvati, on the 4th day after the new moon of the month of the Hindu calendar Bhadrapada.

The deity with elephant head symbolizes for devotees wisdom intelligence and education is celebrated during the Ganesh Chaturthi (public holiday in Mauritius) in temples of the island following 30 days of fasting.

This Friday in the afternoon in colorful processions after an overnight prayers, clay statues to honor the god Ganesh are immersed in the waters of rivers and the ocean to continue the cycle of creation and dissolution in nature.
