"Madagascar is now one of the poorest countries in the world", according to the World Bank

"Madagascar is now one of the poorest countries in the world", according to the World Bank
The political crisis that shakes Madagascar since 2009 has had serious economic consequences, notably for the most vulnerable populations.

The World Bank thus evokes in a note, that despite the high economic potential of the Big Island, the unstable political situation has harshly impacted the growth, yet of 5% per year before the crisis, and gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013 fell back to its level as 2001.

With a strong demographic growth over 3 million more people between 2008 and 2013, the population living below the threshold poverty has increased strongly (+10%) and "Madagascar is today one of the poorest countries in the world», according the World Bank.

To this is added a disastrous social situation with 600,000 school children, many closure of care centers in the Big Island, and an alarming malnutrition among young children.

"So far Madagascar will not be able to achieve most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, even those who were considered potentially achievable in 2007 (such as infant mortality rate net enrollment and completion in primary education, as well as poverty) ", also emphasizes the World Bank.

It also notes that the public finances are under pressure, which foreign aid has declined by 30%, the infrastructure has deteriorated significantly and the locust threat jeopardizes the country's food security, as shown in the site Madagascar-tribune.com.

Governance is also spared. "The weakening of the condition of law, increasing insecurity, poor governance in the exploitation of natural resources (rosewood, gold, precious stones), limited progress on anti-corruption front, and the lack of transparency in the management of public resources have become all the more pressing", argues the World Bank.
