Madagascar Vanilla: Price surges around the green gold in the Big Island

Madagascar Vanilla: Price surges around the green gold in the Big Island
Madagascar produces 60% of vanilla exported around the world.

Between 1,200 and 1,500 tons of beans are harvested every year, but this year's production is declining, about 30%, resulting in a price spike around the gold green at the moment and it is the whole sector which is affected by the lower tonnage prices.

The producers usually sell vanilla to 2.76 euros per kilo to wholesalers, today the first has set the bar to more than 7 euro under the current crop yields.

On their side, the wholesalers also plead to their clients on the outside, importing Madagascan vanilla, an increase in the price of green gold traded the previous year in global markets, between 15 and 30 euros, as indicated by the newspaper L'Express of Madagascar.

As a reminder, 80,000 farmers in Madagascar live on intensive cultivation of this orchid pollinated manually.

A cottage industry that employs the vast plantations in the north of Big Island in the heart of the humid tropics, a cheap labor market.
