Madagascar: Units of gendarmerie and the villagers chasing thieves of zebus in the West and South of the island
In an attempt to stem the related violence to thieves of zebus (dahalo) who loot cattle herds and drain behind growing insecurity in western and southern Madagascar, the military gendarmerie were given the task of hunting down dahalo on the eve of different polls looming on the horizon.

The gendarmerie operation supported by the help of villagers began last Saturday in many districts of the regions concerned.

For the moment, a thief of Zebu was shot by the police near Morondava and made 4 dahalo prisoners in the rural commune of Ankilivalo, as reported by the site madagascar - tribune.com.

Deployment of military force limited number that has not however prevented the theft of eight cattle Mahabo by several armed thieves of zebu and were able to escape with their booty unmolested.

As a reminder, the end of last December, the Transitional Government had put an end to the Tandroka operation (Editor's Note: take the bull by the horns), begun in September 2012 against the dahalo.

The mare of Remenabila, historic leader of dahalo and considered public enemy No. 1 continues in the region of Fort Dauphin.

Zebu theft comes from old Malagasy traditions still strongly rooted in the hinterland.

Symbolically representing virility before marriage, mafia-like gangs thus hijacked it of its meaning first, replace it with a very lucrative criminal trafficking.
