Madagascar: Three species of sea turtles endangered

Three of the five species of turtles living in Madagascar are threatened with extinction, victims of a local traffic for the consumption of their meat.

Hundreds of sea turtles are thus captured each year, particularly in the southwest of the island and their meat is then passed to some 5,000 ariary (1.63 euro) per kilo.

Faced with this alarming situation, the Malagasy authorities decided to react soon by making campaigns of awareness-raising among the population.

The seizure of fishing accessories used in the capture of sea turtles and the strengthening of the judicial powers of officials fighting against this traffic were particularly considered as solutions to curb the phenomenon locally, according to the newspaper L'Express of Madagascar.
