Madagascar: The fishing industry of mangrove crabs growing strongly
The fishing villages in the Tulear region in South West of Madagascar, where mangroves are abundant, have launched for two years in the economic operation of a new line of fishing tour exclusively on crabs mangrove or mud crab.

The strong international demand, since this species of crabs is the most sold in the world, should allow the industry to continue its sharp increase, despite a chronic under-exploitation of mangroves in the area.

Since Madagascar is operating on only a third of its 325,000 ha of mangroves, which account for 20% of mangroves in Africa.

The Malagasy annual crab production now stands at 7,500 tons, while the country's resources could reach 22,500 tons.
