The head of European diplomacy, Catherine Ashton, has formally protested against the candidates in the first round of presidential elections on 24 July, of the former president Didier Ratsiraka, the wife of former Head of State, Lalao Ravalomanana, and the current president of the Transition, Andry Rajoelina.

Catherine Ashton said that these applications "change the context of the elections and will, for some, against commitments made" and that the European Union "supports the recent release" of the SADC (Editor's note: Southern Africa Community Development), which had called for the withdrawal of the three candidates.

Didier Ratsiraka, Lalao Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina have already responded by refusing to throw in the towel in the race for the presidency of Madagascar.

"The European Union will reflect on the preparation of the forthcoming elections to determine support bring to their organization", also said the head of European diplomacy, Catherine Ashton.
