Madagascar: Recrudescence of bushfires in the Island

At the approach of the rainy season, bushfires are multiplying in Madagascar causing significant environmental degradation, and this, despite the strict prohibitions of the authorities.

Each year, about 200,000 hectares of the Malagasy forests are thus affected by bushfires and its severe consequences: erosion, land washing into rivers and extinction of many species.

As a reminder, the Tavy - or slash and burn - is derived from ancient traditions in Madagascar that cause forest clearance on a large scale for better farming land bringing forward fresh grass for cattle and producing charcoal wood used as an energy source for most households in the Island.
