A grenade exploded yesterday in Antanananarivo, causing one dead, a two-year old child and at least forty people injured, according to official sources. The blast happened near Mahamasina municipal stadium where was held the swearing-in of Madagascar new president Hery Rajaonarimampianina.

Most of the victims were injured in their legs, on their head or on their back while a woman had a leg amputated. The blast took place nearly at the end of the concert which was held at the stadium following the new president swearing-in. According to police sources, "a white man" walking on foot, threw the grenade before running away from the scene while the crowd tried in vain to catch him.

The new Madagascar president visited those who were injured in the blast. Mr Rajaonarimampianina has condemned such violence act and said that those responsible for this crime would be pursued. He affirmed that the Madagascar government will take in charge all the hospital costs, as reported on the French newspaper Libération website.
