Madagascar: Meeting between president Hery Rajaonarimampianina and the Pope François

The Malagasy president, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, met the Pope François at the Vatican, on Saturday, June 28, 2014 in the morning, during the first meeting between the two men since his election in December 2013.

Invited by the sovereign pontiff as part of a private audience, the trip to Rome of Hery Rajaonarimampianina thus marks the recognition from the Vatican of new authorities legitimately elected in the Island.

After the audience with the Pope François, Hery Rajaonarimampianina also had an interview with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, who was accompanied by Bishop Antoine Camilleri, Undersecretary for relations of the Holy See with the States, as reported by Vatican Radio.

A press release of the State of Vatican City notably welcomed the quality of the relations between the Vatican and Madagascar, and highlighted "the recovery that experienced Madagascar, and the contribution of the Church to reconciliation and stability of the country".
