Madagascar: Lake Ihotry now a protected sanctuary for migratory birds
The lake of Ihotry about forty kilometers from Morombe in the southwest of Madagascar, is now prohibited the practice of fishing for tilapia which are the only residents of its salty waters.
 
A prohibition measure that has been taken to protect migratory birds who settled in number during periods of severe drought.
 
A real shelter for Flamingos and other Jacana of Madagascar the third largest lake in Madagascar, with an area ranging between 960 ha and 11 200 ha from one season to another, has become a protected sanctuary.
 
Other migratory birds such as Plover, Greenshank and guignette as well as Curlew Sandpiper are also found in winter on Lake Ihotry of the Big Island.
