Madagascar: Helicopters come into action to fight against thieves of zebus

To strengthen the effectiveness of the operation "Coup d'arrêt" launched in mid-June to fight against abuses by thieves of zebus in the south of the Island, the Malagasy gendarmes has decided to use helicopters to fight on the ground against the dahalo.

The gendarmerie of Madagascar has also recently announced that since the beginning of the operation some 1,818 stolen zebu were returned to their owners.

88 thieves of zebus were also neutralised by the security forces and 38 other dahalo were arrested, as reported by the newspaper Madagascar Tribune.

As a reminder, the zebu theft comes from ancient Malagasy traditions, but still well established in the hinterland.

Symbol of manhood before marriage, criminal gangs have turned away from its original meaning, and turn it into a lucrative trade in Madagascar.
