Madagascar: Elite gendarmes sent in the South of the island to fight against thieves of Zebus

To face the growing insecurity prevailing in southern Madagascar from recent weeks and abuses by thieves of zebus known locally as dahalo, Malagasy gendarmeries decided the deployment of elite troops to secure the entire region of the southern Madagascar.

"The time is serious. Actions will be undertaken, to counter the waves of attacks by highwaymen, making them sink into the terror of the sensitive areas in the South of the island", stressed the general of division Didier Gérard Paza, Secretary of State responsible for the gendarmerie in Madagascar.

Companies of Intervention (CSI) of Ivato and Sakaraha, the security group and special Interventions (GSIS), and the Intervention force of the National Gendarmerie (FIGN) will participate in this operation against the dahalo, as shown in the newspaper L'Express of Madagascar.

Last Monday, a violent snap in southeastern Madagascar between the police and thieves of zebus who killed two forces of order and 20 dahalo were shot.

As a reminder, the theft of Zebu comes from ancient Malagasy tradition, but is still well established in the hinterland. Symbol of virility before marriage, criminal gangs turned away from its first meaning, to transform it into a lucrative traffic.
