Madagascar: Deputies vote to abolish the death penalty




The Malagasy deputies adopted on Wednesday a draft law on the abolition of the death penalty on the Island. The text was unanimously voted the 82 deputies in the National Assembly.

Capital punishment is still in force since 1958 in Madagascar. The law is thus awaiting its next promulgation by the President Hery Rajaonarimampianina.

The death penalty will be transformed in the Malagasy Penal Code by life imprisonment with hard labor. Article 1 of the text states that "the death penalty is abolished" and also that "no one shall be executed”.
