Madagascar: Crucial meeting between FAO and funders to fight against migratory locusts in the Island

A meeting of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) alongside funders is scheduled this Tuesday, February 10, 2015 in Madagascar.

The funding of the third stage of the locust control campaign expected to be launched in next March will be discussed between the parties. So far, 7 million dollars are still missing to complete the calendar in place until August to fight against migratory locusts in the Island.

As a reminder, about 1.3 million hectares have already been treated with pesticides by aerial spraying. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had anticipated that at least three consecutive locust campaigns since September 2013 would be required to completely treat the areas severely affected by the invasion of migratory locusts. The total cost of these campaigns had been assessed initially at 43.9 million dollars.

Swarms of locusts since April 2012 have already caused extensive damage on corn plantations, rice and other cereal crops.
