Commemoration events of Saturday 7 February 2009 were held in peace yesterday in Antananarivo. Security forces were on alerts to avoid any lapse in the town centre of Madagascar.

Ceremonies were held in memory to more than forty supporters of Andry Rajoelina, mayor of Antanananarivo during that period, who were killed in front of the presidential palace of Ambohitsorohitra on 7 February in 2009 by guards of former president Marc Ravalomanana, actually in exile in South Africa. More than 200 persons were injured during the pro-Rajoelina protest.

Andry Rajoelina, former Malagasy president, was present at the commemoration ceremony at municipal stadium Mahasina, organised by AV7, the association for victims of 7 February 2009. The President of the Republic, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, did not attend the religious cult but sent some representatives. Some survivors of the killing were also present at the ceremony.

Some thousands of people were on this occasion, dressed in MAPAR's party colours, the party with the majority at the National Assembly of Madagascar, as indicated by rfi.fr/afrique.

After the commemoration ceremony, wreaths were laid by politicians and relatives of the victims in front of the monument erected in memory to the victims in front of Ambohitsorohitra Palace.
