A shipment of 1600 reptiles and amphibians from Madagascar was intercepted in South Africa on Friday. They were found in two crates at Johannesburg airport, hundreds of them were already dead or dehydrated.

The shipment was heading to the United States but due to bad weather, flights were cancelled. As a matter of fact, it has been left without checking in the cargo area when bad smells were coming from the crates, which provoked the alarm, according to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) in  South Africa.

More than 360 of these animals died due to dehydration, infections or other causes. The reptiles and amphibians have been placed in small plastic bags. They were taken into charge by Johannesburg Zoo. Many of these reptiles belong to endangered species and were expected to be sold in the United States.
