Madagascar: 89 thieves of zebus neutralised in the South of the island during the “Coup d'arrêt" operation
While the first step of the "Coup d'arrêt" operation launched in mid-June to fight against exaction perpetrated by thieves of zebus (dahalo) in the South of Madagascar was completed since a few weeks, the commandment of the Malagasy gendarmerie is declared satisfied of the result.

89 thieves of zebus had thus been counteracted and rendered harmless by the forces of order. 74 others are also under lock and key, as well as a score of guns had been seized.

Two gendarmes had equally been wounded and a soldier has been found dead at Miandrivazo during pacification operations of zones formally reputed for their dangers.

1.038 zebus had thus been recovered on 10561 head of stolen cattle, as reported the journal Les Nouvelles newspaper of Madagascar.

The theft of zebu comes from ancient Malagasy traditions, but still well established in the hinterland. Symbol of virility before marriage, criminal gangs turned away from its meaning, to transform it into a juicy traffic.
