Madagascar: 4 million people threatened by food insecurity
Four million people in rural areas of Madagascar are threatened by food insecurity following crop failures of this year according to the WFP (World Food Program).
The production of rice and corn were hit head-on by the invasion of swarms of locusts and severe weather, including cyclones which caused flooding at the beginning of the year and a period then low activity in terms of precipitation.

South of the island already plagued by chronic insecurity was particularly impacted by the locust threat.
"We have learned a lesson from the bad harvest of last season. We will act on the basis of this lesson, including by strengthening the control of water through the creation of irrigation canals and the fight against the locust invasion", stresses his side Roland Ravatomanga, the Minister of Agriculture to the newspaper L'Express of Madagascar.

For the representative of WFP in the island, Willem van Milink, the picture is hardly gratifying because only "430,000 people strongly affected by food insecurity this year" may be supported.
