Madagascar: 3 million more inhabitants in 2025 in the big Malagasy cities

According to projections of the national institute of the Malagasy statistic (Instat), the urban population in the island will increase by 3 million inhabitants, on the horizon of 2025, with a rural exodus more supported in the coming years and a population growth of 45%.

"This phenomenon is explained by the rush of young people fleeing the countryside looking for less strenuous and more remunerative jobs in cities... The cultivable area which becomes more and more restricted... also promotes the rural exodus", said the Director of Instat, Paul Gérard Ravelomanantsoa.

The major cities of Madagascar today already accommodate 6 million people, including 2 million in Tananarive, with certain areas of the urban community of the capital where cohabit 20,000 inhabitants per km2, as shown in the newspaper Les Nouvelles of Madagascar.

As a reminder, the Malagasy population varies according to the numbers between 20 and 22 million people.
