Madagascar: 3.500 midwife for a population of over 20 million of inhabitants

While the international sanitary norms recommend in proportion one midwife for 5000 inhabitants, Madagascar should have 4.400 professionals to be in position to practise in the island.
Nevertheless, midwife enumerated in Madagascar are only some 3.500 to fight against the high maternal and neonatal mortality, as reported in the Midi Madagasikara newspaper.
As a reminder, on 100.000 births in Madagascar, over 450 mothers die during their pregnancy or delivery.
The infant mortality rate also crosses the mark of 50 deaths per 1,000 births.

As a reminder, the total Malagasy population varies according to figures between 20 and 22 million of inhabitants.
