Fishing of a female dugong in the lagoon of Mayotte

Earlier this week, a Mahoran fisherman who operated in the lagoon of Mayotte has brought in his nets a female dugong, a species protected since 1995.

The police assisted the Brigade nature and members of the natural marine park were soon dispatched on site upon arrival of the boat. An investigation was initiated to determine whether the decision was accidental or deliberate.

The first elements available to investigators show that fishing was intentional. The fisherman in question might be severely sentenced to one year of imprisonment and 15,000 euros fine.
