A vessel of the Atalanta Operation calls in Madagascar

The Spanish navy ship Galicia will drop anchor in the port of Diego Suarez in the far north of Madagascar, from this Wednesday and this until 15 September.

The vessel is currently taking part in Operation Atalanta under the aegis of the European Union aimed at combating against maritime piracy.

This is the first time a vessel operating for the effective operation Atalanta in the south of the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean stopped in the Island, said the Ambassador of Spain in Madagascar.

Operation Atalanta started in 2008 was extended until 2016.

The priority missions operated by the European naval force in the zone of the Horn of Africa and around the coast of Somalia aim to reduce the proceedings of maritime piracy and ensure the escort of "sensitive" merchant ships that move there. And the results have obviously met the expectations: 176 pirate attacks in 2011, 7 in 2013 and only 2 in 2014.
